Hypothyroidism also called low thyroid, under-active thyroid or hypothyreosis is a disorder of the endocrine system in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough of thyroid hormone.

Signs and symptoms of Hypothyroidism

Watch out for some of the signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism to be in a better position to deal with the health issues.

Fatigue – a feeling of dizziness, frequent headaches and chronic sleepiness

Constipation – digestive changes resulting in an irritable and troublesome feeling of constipation over a period of time.

Dry skin – loss of moisture in the skin scaling up to uncomfortable levels and resulting in dry and flaky skin

Weight gain – a sudden and inexplicable weight gain with no change in diet or the normal routine.

Hair loss – Growth and health of hair follicles can be affected resulting in hair loss which could be a cause for concern.

Muscle weakness – weakness and tenderness of muscles and joints resulting in aches.

Some common risk factors to look for if you:

  • Are a woman
  • Are older than 60 years
  • If the person have a family history thyroid disease
  • Have autoimmune diseases, such as type 1 diabetes
  • If in past the person have been treated with anti-thyroid medications
  • The person had thyroid surgery recently
  • Have been pregnant
  • Have delivered in last few months

Complications of Hypothyroidism.

Untreated hypothyroidism can lead to a number of health problems:

Goiter : This can affect our appearance and can create problems related to swallowing or breathing.

Heart problems: There is an increased risk of heart disease and heart failure due to an underactive thyroid.

Mental health issues: Depression and slow mental functioning could be seen due to hypothyroidism.

Myxedema: A rare, life-threatening condition as a result of long-term, undiagnosed hypothyroidism. The signs to look out for are intense cold intolerance and drowsiness and a profound lethargy and unconsciousness.

Infertility: hypothyroidism could impact ovulation and this could lead to infertility. In addition, in some cases birth defects can be witnessed too.

It is extremely important to observe yourself and look out for any of the above mentioned issues and factors. Be watchful and get yourself diagnosed for abnormal functioning of thyroid gland. Stay learned and stay healthy.
